Biography

Musician | Educator | Administrator

Phillip Marion is a brass player and music educator from Philadelphia, PA, who recently completed his DMA from James Madison University. He is a versatile artist, having performed in solo, chamber, and large ensemble concerts throughout the continental United States and Europe, and having won and placed highly in numerous regional and international music competitions. He currently plays solo euphonium for the Philadelphia Wind Symphony and University of Pennsylvania Wind Ensemble. He has also played euphonium and trombone with many great ensembles including the Dallas Brass Band, Princeton Brass Band & Symphonic Brass, Atlantic Brass Band, Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra, James Madison University Brass Band & Symphony Orchestra.

 

​Phillip began teaching college level courses in 2015 when he was appointed graduate intern for the music education department at Temple University where he lectured Brass Methods I, and co-lectured Brass Methods II alongside Dr. Matthew Brunner. His areas of specialty include brass performance & pedagogy, music literature, music analysis, music history, and ethnomusicology. His dissertation “American Euphonium Literature: Trends and Analysis from the Golden Age of Bands through the 21st Century” was published in 2021 and includes original historical research into the development of the euphonium as a solo instrument in the United States and analysis of three quintessential works in the instrument’s repertoire.​

 

In addition to his brass specific expertise, Phillip is known for his integrated approach to music and music education. He has demonstrated this through his life-long learning lectures in Music Appreciation, his work with brass students of all ages and levels, and his writing through Penn's OMNIA magazine.  

 

Phillip has studied with some of the world’s top brass performers, including Pennsylvania Ballet tubist Jay Krush, euphonium soloist and clinician Brian Bowman and tuba soloist and conductor Kevin Stees. These expert teachers have helped him develop both highly acclaimed musical technique and a deep passion for the art. He is currently working in development for the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and his administrative background prior to joining Penn includes being development assistant at UNT College of Music, program associate for a national non-profit, and assistant manager for the James Madison University Brass Band.
